No words can explain the four days I spent on my ranch in October with incredible veterans from five generations of combat - WWII (alas they could not attend due to COVID), Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Afghan, and Iraq. Veterans represented the Air Force, Navy, Marines, Army, and Navy Seals brought together by @greatestgenerationsfoundation. I was honored as they released their inner demons, thoughts, and memories in front of me. It was powerful, revealing, gut-wrenching, tearful, heavy, and penetrated my soul. They are full of pain, tortured and have been mainly forgotten and isolated to some degree. The majority of the civilized world has no comprehension of what many of these heroes are going through. I took one out last night (Marine), and he harvested his first elk. I cannot explain what it meant to both of us. Another, (Seal) shot a gun for the first time in 40 yrs. and told me it was so cathartic, but also dug up the past. I admired him for even doing it. I, of all people, was a shooting coach for a Navy Seal. The appreciation he shared with me is indescribable—just one small step closer for him to having freedom within. To fulfill a dream to a double amputee (legs) with half an arm to ride a horse was a mission my ranch hands and I accepted. We crafted a special saddle with support and straps, and away he went on Chester, our mule. When he arrived, I knew he felt like he did not belong - wheelchair-bound on a ranch in the Rocky Mountains - obviously uncertain if he could engage with any ranch activities. When I saw the smile on his face as he rode Chester, and the joy he got from shooting sporting clays and activities, made all our efforts so meaningful. Another box checked on the battle within for a hero. Then there was Grady/Bill/James/Pam/Rena/Chris, all embracing the experiences 7L delivered like golfing, fishing, hunting, sporting clays, long-range rifle shooting, ATV's, and horseback riding. Their words, thoughts, memories, and pain expressed are etched on my heart and will remain with me.
