Record Norman Victory At Dunlop Masters

Greg Norman shot a second successive record-equaling 65, for a runaway, eight-shot victory in the British Masters' golf tournament at St Pierre at Chepstow, Wales.

The 27-year-old Brisbane star shattered the Masters record with a 17-under-par total of 267, three strokes inside the precious best set by West German Bernard Langer on the same course in 1980.

Norman's winning margin was also a Masters record, the biggest in Britain for 19 years, and the most conclusive on the European tour since Norman walked away with the French Open by 10 shots two years ago.

The Queenslander started the last say with a three strokes lead. By the time he cruised to the turn in 32, the contest was over, his lead extended to five shots over American Hubert Green.

Green, a former U.S. Open champion, had a disappointing end to the tournament. He had held second place on his own until three putting the 16th and a missed putt on the 18th, sent the American down to joint third with Spaniard Manuel Pinero, former champion Graham Marsh of Australia and Briton Tommy Horton.

Norman's victory was his first since he took the Maters title at Woburn 12 months ago and earned him $24,780.

"It's a good time to win just four weeks before the British Open," he said.
