Masters To Norman - Explosive Performance
Greg Norman exhibited superb form all of last year, and judging by his explosive winning performance at Huntingdale this week it could be another splendid season.
The Shark tore the course apart, posting a new tournament record 19-under-par in what can only be described as an awesome display of power and precision. He posted individual rounds of 68, 67, 68 and 70, a four-day tally that may stand the test of time.
Nobody in the 62-man field came even close to thwarting Norman's charge. It was described by enthusiasts and experts alike as a flawless exhibition. Peter Senior finished second, a distant nine strokes behind Norman's record-setting mark. Vaughn Somers finished third.
When Norman stepped on the first tee box there was an air about him and it was as if he decided right then and there he would take no prisoners and by opening with three sub-70 rounds he was well on his way. Somers rallied in the second and third rounds with sub-70 rounds of his own, but it was far too little and too late.
The weather in Melbourne was a mixed bag over the four-day tournament, and, as expected, the crowds were out in force. Norman's adoring galleries were treated to a special display.
