Norman and Faxon Repeat
Greg Norman and Brad Faxon shot a final round 61, for a two-day total of 18 under-par 124, to repeat as champions in the Fred Meyer Challenge, held at the Oregon Golf Club.
The 124 total was a lowest score since the 2-day tournament moved to the Oregon Golf Club five years ago.
Norman and Faxon narrowly avoid a playoff when Mark Calcavecchia missed a 3-foot par putt on the final hole, causing the team of Calcavecchia and Billy Mayfair to finish one shot out of first place. Norman and Faxon split the first place prize of $100,000.
The Fred Meyer tournament is one of the most successful and popular non-sanctioned PGA events, drawing such names as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, and Nick Faldo. It is organized by popular PGA Tourprofessional Peter Jacobsen.
