Australian Wins International

1977 Martini International

Greg Norman laid claim to his first European Tour title at the Martini International in Perthshire, Scotland. He scored a 15-under 277 and defeated Zimbabwean Simon Hobday by three strokes. Englishmen Howard Clark and Doug McLelland, together with Welshman David Vaughan, finished equal third.

After three rounds Norman was two strokes behind Clark. The Australian seized his chance on the back nine during the final round, as he made five birdies in a six-hole stretch on his way to a course-record 66.

Played on the Blairgowrie course, the event traditionally attracts a strong international field. Norman won three thousand pounds for the win.

Norman turned professional just one year ago and had a magnificent triumph in just his fourth professional event, the West Lakes Classic. It was a convincing win against an impressive field. If his performance persists at the level he displayed this week in Scotland, we will be hearing much more of the charismatic young Aussie
