Third Martini For Norman
Greg Norman returned to Wentworth and claimed his third Martini International title in five years by defeating German Bernhard Langer by one stroke.
On the final hole, Norman selected a 1-iron for his second shot and blasted the ball with every ounce of energy he could muster. The long-hitting Australian rocketed that shot an astounding 228 yards onto the green. It came to rest 50 feet from the hole and Norman holed the eagle putt for a most-dramatic finish.
Langer’s birdie putt strayed from the cup and Norman was home with yet another victory. To this day, Norman considers that final-hole charge one of his all-time best en route to victory.
Rain lashed the course all week, and the final day was no exception. By the time Norman reached the 18th hole, play had been delayed and his final round stretched to six hours. This was the Australian’s second tournament title of the year. In March, he secured an impressive victory in the Australian Masters.
