Norman/Faxon Win Fred Meyer Challenge
Greg Norman forced a playoff by sinking a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, then teammate Brad Faxon knocked in a 15-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to beat Paul Azinger and Payne Stewart and win the best-ball Fred Meyer Challenge at Oregon Golf Club in West Linn, Oregon.
Norman and Faxon shot a 7-under-par 64 in the second round to finish with at 13 under. Azinger and Stewart, who led after the first round, closed with a 65. They held the lead over much of the final 18 holes, but Norman and Faxon, who moments earlier failed to birdie the par-5 15th, pulled even when it mattered most.
After Azinger executed a wonderful 4-iron approach to 18, it looked like Norman and Faxon were out of luck, however, after Norman sunk a clutch 15-footer for birdie, Azinger’s 10-foot attempt slid over the left edge of the cup leaving the teams tied.
The Oregon Golf Club measures 6,889 yards.
